What
Mini & Portable Greenhouses Do
Mini and portable greenhouses trap heat by admitting sunlight
in during the day through its covering and retaining heat radiated from the surrounding
soil during the cold night hours. When closed, it also traps moisture inside the
structure cutting down on your watering chores. Portable greenhouses and cold
frames are useful for early planting of summer annuals and seeds, protecting tender
plants in winter, forcing cuttings to root faster, starting perennials from seed
in summer, and growing many kinds of plants you wouldn't normally be able to grow
in your area. If heated, mini and portable greenhouses can also be used to overwinter
plants in many areas.
Why Mini
& Portable Greenhouses are so popular
Mini and portable greenhouses have become one of the most popular greenhouses
purchased by gardeners for several reasons. The main factor is the ability for
portable greenhouses to be taken down and stored when they are not needed. Many
gardeners do not need or want to have a greenhouse up year round. Mini and portable
greenhouses are also popular with first time greenhouse buyers because they are
less expensive and intimidating. They make great starter greenhouses by allowing
people who are not sure about investing a lot into greenhouse gardening to purchase
a greenhouse without spending more money than they are comfortable with on it.
Portable greenhouses are also quick and easy to assemble versus most permanent
greenhouses preventing the owner from needed tools are a professional to install
it.
Helpful Tips
. Insulation
may be necessary when a sudden cold snap is expected. A simple method is to throw
burlap sacks filled with leaves over the sash on the frame at night to protect
against freezing, or bales of straw or hay may be stacked against the frame. Heaters,
heating cables, and mats are also recommended, especially for larger structures,
to keep greenhouse temperatures in check.
. Ventilation
is most critical in the late winter, early spring, and early fall on clear, sunny
days when temperatures rise above 45°F. The vent(s) should be raised partially
to prevent the buildup of extreme temperatures inside the frame. Lower vents each
day early enough to conserve some heat for the evening.
. Shading
a mini portable greenhouse or cold frame will prevent damage to plants from extreme
heat and intensive sunlight in the summer. Commonly used coverings include lath,
old bamboo window blinds, and knitted shade
covers.
. Watering
should be done early so that plants dry before dark, to help reduce disease problems.
